Arsenal open talks for Corinthians defender Iago Machado

Arsenal have been linked with a possible move for young Brazilian defender Iago Machado, according to reports from Globo Esporte.

The Gunners continue to search for young talents across different regions as part of a long-term plan. This approach has already brought success in recent seasons under Mikel Arteta.

One clear example is Gabriel Martinelli, who arrived at a young age and became a key player. His progress has encouraged Arsenal to keep trusting the same pathway for future signings.

Iago Machado is now the latest name to appear on the club’s radar.

Arsenal make early contact over teenage defender

The report claims Arsenal have already made contact with both Corinthians officials and the player’s camp. The talks are described as early checks rather than formal negotiations at this stage.

Machado is only 16 and remains fully focused on his development in Brazil. Recently, the young defender took a major step forward in his career.

Corinthians head coach Dorival Júnior invited him to train with the senior squad. Despite this progress, any transfer would need to wait due to current rules.

International moves for players under 18 are not allowed under present laws. Machado will only be able to move abroad once he turns 18 in February next year.

Corinthians prepare firm stance

Corinthians are fully aware of rising interest from clubs outside Brazil. Arsenal and Ajax are both said to be monitoring the situation closely.

The Brazilian club expect further approaches as the defender continues to improve. In response, Corinthians have already taken protective steps.

The board recently agreed a contract update with the young centre-back. His salary was improved and his release clause was raised sharply. The new clause now stands at around £85 million, as per the report.

This move shows Corinthians plan to stand firm if offers arrive later on. At present, there are no active talks between the clubs. However, Corinthians expect interest to turn serious in the near future.

Standing at 1.87 metres, Machado fits the modern centre-back profile. His reading of danger and sense of timing are praised by coaches. Leadership is another quality noticed at youth level.

He also poses a threat during set pieces inside the opposition box. Many of his goals have come from headers and loose balls.

Machado joined Corinthians at the age of six and grew through the system. He has completed his entire football education at the club.
