Arsenal made contact to sign Barcelona’s Fermin Lopez

Arsenal reportedly made contact to sign Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez this summer, as per TEAMtalk.

The Gunners currently have Martin Odegaard and Eberechi Eze as specialist options to deploy in the creative midfield position. Moreover, Max Dowman can provide cover in this position if needed.

However, despite selling Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard this summer, Mikel Arteta’s side only purchased Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge. As a result, the Spanish boss has used Eze on the left flank to support the Greek international this season.

On the other hand, Dowman is still very young and his game time needs to be managed carefully to help him reach his full potential. Odegaard, meanwhile, displayed inconsistent performances last term but has enjoyed a promising start this season.

Now, TEAMtalk claim that Arsenal explored the possibility of signing a new CAM this summer and held talks over a deal for López as intermediaries believed the 23-year-old could leave.

Apart from the North London club, Manchester United and Chelsea also made contact to seal the deal. However, Barcelona ultimately rejected to sell him, while López refused to leave his boyhood club, with Hansi Flick considering him as a key player.

López is valued at around £86m by Transfermarkt and still has a contract until 2031. Therefore, the Blaugrana aren’t in any rush to sell him.

López is a creative midfielder by trait but is also comfortable in the box-to-box role. Furthermore, he can provide cover on the flanks if needed. He is efficient in creating opportunities for the attackers, can finish off his chances, and works hard without possession.

The Spaniard showcased his productivity last campaign, making 30 goal contributions across all competitions. He has won two La Liga titles and a few domestic cup competitions with Barcelona in recent years.

This season, he has enjoyed a stellar start, helping his side win all eight matches across all competitions. Having proven his worth in club football, he has secured his place in the Spain squad for this international break.

López is a top-class player and possesses high potential. So, he would have been a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal had they purchased him this summer.
