Arsenal in fierce battle to sign Leverkusen’s Jarell Quansah

By on October 1, 2026

Arsenal are reportedly in a fierce battle over a deal to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah, as per German outlet SportBild.

Following William Saliba’s serious back problem, the Gunners decided to reinforce the backline by purchasing Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa this summer.

As a result, Mikel Arteta currently has the Englishman and Cristhian Mosquera as options to deploy in the RCB position, while Ben White and Jurrien Timber mainly feature as right-backs.

However, White has had numerous fitness problems over the last few years, while Timber has also had injury issues since joining from Ajax Amsterdam.

On the other hand, Mosquera was out injured before the international break. Therefore, the Spanish boss is seemingly planning to sign a new defender this summer.

Now, while citing and translating the print version of SportBild, Sport Witness report that before signing Konsa, Arsenal expressed their interest in Quansah and launched a formal proposal this summer.

However, Leverkusen refused to let him leave, with his existing deal set to run until 2030. Still, Arsenal remain keen on him and are making intense efforts to finalise the operation.

Quansah to Arsenal

However, the Gunners will have to overcome fierce competition to seal the deal as Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid are also in this race, while the Reds hold a buyback clause.

Although Quansah hasn’t pushed to leave BayArena yet, he would be open to returning to England, with the player valued at around £38m by Transfermarkt.

Arteta likes having versatile defenders and Quansah can play in the right-back and centre-back positions. Since moving to BayArena from Liverpool, the Englishman has shown glimpses of his high potential.

After being impressed by his development in the German Bundesliga, Thomas Tuchel has made Quansah a key part of the England national team.

Quansah, standing at 6ft 3in tall, is quick, comfortable playing out from the back, good in the air and is efficient in defensive contributions.

He is a talented player and could be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him in January or next summer. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to secure his services by defeating other clubs in this race.
