Arsenal in fierce battle to sign FC Porto’s Alberto Costa

Arsenal are reportedly in a fierce battle over a deal to sign FC Porto defender Alberto Costa, as per Caught Offside.

After being impressed by the 22-year-old’s performances for Portuguese side Vitória SC, Juventus decided to purchase him in January 2025.

However, he struggled to find his feet in Serie A; therefore, the Bianconeri sold him to Porto permanently last summer. Costa displayed promising performances at Estádio do Dragão, scoring a solitary goal and registering eight assists in 44 appearances across all competitions last term.

Moreover, he helped his side keep nine clean sheets. The Portuguese has won a Primeira Liga title and a Super Cup with Porto in recent times.

Now, Caught Offside claim that Arsenal have registered their interest in signing Costa after monitoring his development closely but haven’t made a formal approach yet.

Apart from the Gunners, Manchester United, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain have also been keeping a close eye on him before making a potential swoop.

With the player’s existing deal set to run until 2030, Porto aren’t in any rush to sell him, and he has a £56m[€65m] release clause in his current contract, with Juventus having a 10% sell-on clause.

Costa to Arsenal

Costa is a 6ft 1in tall right-footed right-back but can provide cover in the RWB position if needed. He is quick, can make surging runs from deep, and is efficient in defensive contributions.

Arsenal currently have Jurrien Timber and Ben White as the specialist right-back options. Moreover, Cristhian Mosquera and Ezri Konsa can provide cover in this area if needed.

However, White has had numerous fitness problems in recent years, while Timber has also had a few fitness problems since joining from Ajax Amsterdam. Mosquera was even sidelined due to an injury just before the international break.

As a result, it appears the North London club want a new right-sided defender. Costa is a talented player and possesses high potential. Therefore, he would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure Costa’s services in January or next summer.
