Arsenal are reportedly ‘determined’ to sign Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.
The Gunners came close to overcoming their long-standing drought of winning the Premier League title in the last two campaigns. But, they were pipped to the post by Manchester City on both occasions.
So, Mikel Arteta said ahead of this season that winning the league title is his primary objective this campaign. The North London club purchased Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino, moreover, Raheem Sterling and Neto were signed on loan to bolster the squad last summer.
However, Arsenal have had an inconsistent first half of this season. They are currently second in the Premier League table with 39 points from 19 games, sitting six points behind Liverpool – who have a game in hand.
So, it seems Arteta is planning to reinforce the squad in January to improve the on-field performances and push Liverpool for the title in the second half of this season.
Williams to Arsenal
Fichajes state that Arsenal want to sign a new wide attacker and have set their sights on Williams. The Gunners were linked with a move for him last summer but a deal eventually didn’t materialise, now, they are determined to get the deal done.
Williams is valued at around £50m and has a contract until 2027 at San Mamés so they are in a strong position to stay firm on their valuation.
Barcelona are also interested in him but the North London club have an advantage in this race as the Blaugrana have been in financial difficulties and can’t afford to get the deal done by matching the Basque club’s asking price.
Williams is a left-winger by traits but can also provide cover on the right side if needed. He is quick, can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas and is also efficient in front of the goal.
He enjoyed a stellar campaign last term, making 16 goal contributions in La Liga. The 22-year-old helped Spain win the European Championship last summer. However, he has had a slow first half of this season, scoring a solitary goal in 17 league appearances.
Nevertheless, he is a talented player and possesses high potential so he would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal if they purchase him.
