Video: Arsenal 1-1 Atletico Madrid: Comical defending gifts Madrid late equaliser
More shocking defending from Arsenal gifted 10-man Atletico Madrid a 1-1 draw after we wasted numerous chances to take control of our Europa League semi-final.
We enjoyed the perfect start as Atletico were reduced to 10-men after just 9 minutes after Sime Vrsaljko was sent off for two bookings and Diego Simeone was then also sent to the stands.
Arsenal completely dominated the first half but we squandered several chances to get on the score sheet while Jan Oblak also made a few solid saves to keep it at 0-0 at half time.
However, we finally made our advantage count as Jack Wilshere stood one up for Alexandre Lacazette and the striker leapt to head home for 1-0 in the 61st minute.
We continued to dominate against a Madrid side happy to sit with ten men behind the ball but we couldn’t find a second goal and in typical Arsenal style, we gifted them a priceless equaliser.
A simple ball over the top wasn’t dealt with as Laurent Koscielny kicked the ball against his own face [!], Antoine Griezmann’s initial shot was saved by David Ospina but the ball fell to the Madrid striker and he fired home after Shkodran Mustafi slipped on the line.
It was truly awful stuff and unfortunately it’s not the first time we’ve seen this kind of pathetic ‘defending’ from Arsenal over the years so we now head to Spain needing to score against a side we’ve conceded just 4 league goals at home all season.
Here are the goals:
