Arsenal submit bid to sign Ajax star Jurrien Timber
Arsenal have reportedly launched a £30m bid to sign Ajax Amsterdam star Jurrien Timber this summer, as per the transfer expert David Ornstein.
The 22-year-old was heavily linked with a move away from the Johan Cruijff ArenA last summer and Manchester United were reportedly keen on securing his signature. However, the defender opted to stay at the Dutch capital for one more season so a deal didn’t materialise.
It appears the Netherlands international is set to leave Ajax in this transfer window and the Red Devils have been credited with an interest in him once again.
However, out of the blue, writing in The Athletic, Ornstein has reported that Arsenal have accelerated their efforts to sign Timber and they have already agreed on personal terms with the defender. So, it seems the Gunners have jumped in front of the queue ahead of Man Utd in this race.
The journalist further claims that Arsenal have already submitted an opening £30m bid to secure Timber’s signature, however, the Eredivisie giants want a fee of around £50m. But, Ornstein says that there is optimism that ‘compromise can be reached between the two clubs’. So, it looks likely that Mikel Arteta’s side will be able to sign the defender in this transfer window.
Timber to Arsenal
After Arsenal’s slump following William Saliba’s injury absence last season, the Gunners have seemingly decided to sign a new defender in this transfer window to support the Frenchman. They have been linked with a few options over the last few weeks with Timber now emerging as the primary target.
Mikel Arteta likes to sign versatile players – who can play different positions and the Ajax star would be an ideal option as he can be deployed as a centre-back as well as a fullback.
The Dutchman is quick, technically sound, comfortable playing out from the back and also excellent in defensive contributions. Timber is an extremely talented player and possesses the necessary attributes to play in Arteta’s possession-based style of football.
So, the Netherlands international would be a shrewd signing for Arsenal if they can acquire his service. It is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to lure the defender to the Emirates Stadium in this summer transfer window.
