Arsenal were interested in signing Morgan Rogers this summer
Arsenal were reportedly interested in signing Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers this summer, as per The Telegraph.
After moving to Villa Park from Middlesbrough last year, the 23-year-old enjoyed a promising campaign last term, scoring 14 goals and registering 13 assists across all competitions.
He helped his side reach the quarterfinal of the Champions League before narrowly losing to eventual champions PSG. Moreover, he guided the Villans to qualify for Europe by finishing in the top six.
However, he has had a slow start to this campaign, failing to score or assist in any of the first five matches in all tournaments.
Now, The Telegraph claim that after being impressed by the Englishman’s performances last term, Arsenal were interested in signing him this summer. However, they weren’t the only club in this race as Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, and another top six club were also keen on him.
But Unai Emery’s side refused to let him leave for anything less than £80m; eventually, the Gunners or any other club didn’t make a concrete approach. The player didn’t push to force a move either.
Rogers to Arsenal
Arsenal were willing to sign a left-sided creative forward, and after failing to buy the Villa star, they decided to purchase Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace.
He made his Arsenal debut against Liverpool and registered an assist versus Nottingham Forest in the Premier League last weekend. The Englishman even made his Champions League debut against Athletic Club in midweek.
Like Rogers, Eze is also comfortable playing in the CAM and left-wing roles. So, he is the perfect alternative option to the former Manchester City youngster. Moreover, the Gunners managed to sign him for a cheaper deal.
It is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club opt to revive their interest in signing Rogers in the upcoming transfer windows despite having bought Eze.
Meanwhile, after finishing second in the last three consecutive Premier League campaigns, Arsenal spent big this summer, signing eight new players to provide Mikel Arteta with the resources needed to finally become English champions and end the club’s two-decade league title drought.
