Arsenal hold talks to sign Tottenham’s Cristian Romero

Arsenal have reportedly held talks with Tottenham Hotspur over a deal to sign Cristian Romero, as per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

After being impressed by the 28-year-old’s performances for Atalanta, the Lilywhites decided to sign him in 2024. He initially joined on loan before the deal became permanent last year.

The Argentinian has established himself as an undisputed starter for Spurs, helping his side win the Europa League trophy last campaign. In 32 appearances across all competitions, he scored six goals and registered three assists. Moreover, he kept eight clean sheets last term.

Alongside displaying impressive performances in club football, Romero has enjoyed great success with Argentina at the international level, winning two Copa America and a World Cup.

Now, on his YouTube channel, Romano states that Arsenal are considering purchasing a new centre-back this summer and have identified Romero as a serious option.

They have held talks with the player’s representatives and the Lilywhites to learn about the details of signing him. However, Spurs don’t want to allow him to join a direct rival and prefer to sell him abroad.

The journalist further claims that Inter Milan agreed on a deal in principle with Tottenham for a fee of around £34m to sign him. But the player doesn’t want to return to Italy, and Atlético Madrid are his preferred destination.

Romero to Arsenal

Therefore, Los Rojiblancos are currently the frontrunners in this race and have already started negotiating with Roberto De Zerbi’s side to finalise the operation.

Romero is a technically gifted right-footed centre-back. He is quick, strong, good in the air, comfortable playing out from the back, and is efficient in defensive contributions. Moreover, he reads the game well and can chip in with some important goals.

Following William Saliba’s serious back injury, Arsenal currently have Cristhian Mosquera as the only specialist RCB option, as Mikel Arteta prefers to use Jurrien Timber and Ben White as right-backs.

Although Romero has a tendency to pick up unnecessary red cards, he is a top-class defender and is currently at the prime stage of his career. Therefore, he would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they eventually opt to secure his services this summer.
