Ezri Konsa was superb for Arsenal in Hull City win
Ezri Konsa put on a combative display as Arsenal secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over Hull City at the Emirates Stadium.
Although captain Martin Odegaard and match-winning winger Noni Madueke are likely to take most of the credit, Arsenal’s hard-earned and narrow victory over the Tigers owed just as much to Konsa’s contribution as it did to the two attackers.
With Hull City pushing desperately for an equaliser in the closing minutes, the England international dealt with two dangerous crosses, heading both clear after they came in from opposite flanks.
Konsa also proved vital in stopping a dangerous second-half counter-attack from the Tigers, stepping in to dispossess Mohamed-Ali Cho as Hull looked to break forward. He then put Lucas Gourna-Douath under intense pressure, forcing the midfielder to shoot straight at David Raya from a tight angle.
At full time, the 29-year-old made eight clearances, won possession six times, made one tackle, blocked one shot and, most remarkably, won all his seven contested duels, according to Squawka.
He also demonstrated his composure in possession, recording 70 touches and completing 51 of his 53 passes.
Konsa was superb
Given his significant defensive workload, his five line-breaking passes were particularly impressive and highlighted his suitability for Mikel Arteta’s system, which relies heavily on fast breaks and quick transitions from the back.
The win over Hull meant Arsenal have now won eight of the nine games Konsa has played in the Premier League since arriving from Villa for £55m.
More impressively, the Gunners have kept seven clean sheets in that run, including four in a row. Only Birmingham City, Chelsea in 2004-05 and Manchester United in 2017-18 have recorded more clean sheets after ten games (8).
It was also Arsenal’s 10th consecutive win at the Emirates Stadium across all competitions, their most under Arteta since recording 12 in 2022.
Konsa’s solid form has left the manager with difficult choices to make as the season progresses following the return of William Saliba from a lengthy injury.
While the France international travelled to Slavia Prague on Tuesday, he was excluded entirely from the squad that faced Hull City, suggesting he may not be fully match-ready.
Still, there is no doubt about what a fully fit Saliba brings to the team, and Arteta now faces a difficult selection dilemma, with Konsa making himself indispensable through his impressive performances.
