Arsenal in fierce battle to sign Como star Jacobo Ramon
Arsenal are reportedly battling with Premier League rivals over a deal to sign Como star Jacobo Ramon, as per TEAMtalk.
Following William Saliba’s back problem, the Gunners decided to reinforce the backline by purchasing Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa last summer.
However, the Frenchman has recovered from his injury. Therefore, Mikel Arteta currently has Saliba plus Konsa, Cristhian Mosquera and Gabriel Magalhaes as available centre-back options.
Moreover, Ben White, Jurrien Timber, Piero Hincapié and Riccardo Calafiori can provide cover in this position, although they have mainly featured as fullbacks under Arteta.
Still, TEAMtalk claim that Arsenal have continued to explore centre-back options and are admirers of Ramon after being impressed by his recent eye-catching performances.
However, the Emirates club aren’t prioritising signing him, while Chelsea and Manchester United are showing stronger interest in finalising the operation.
On the other hand, Liverpool and Fulham are also in this race. Ramon is valued at around £42m and has a contract until 2030 with Como. So, Cesc Fábregas’ side aren’t in any rush to sell him.
Ramon to Arsenal
The report state that the 21-year-old joined Como from Real Madrid and they hold a buyback option and a 50% sell-on clause. Los Blancos are even considering bringing him back next year. Therefore, it won’t be straightforward for Arsenal or any other Premier League clubs to buy him.
Ramon is a 6ft 5in tall right-footed centre-back. He is quick, technically sound, comfortable playing out from the back, can chip in with some important goals, and is efficient in defensive contributions.
In 14 appearances across all competitions, he has made five goal contributions this season. Moreover, he has helped his side keep two clean sheets thus far. Ramon even helped Como thrash Lens 9-1 in the Champions League by registering an assist in midweek.
The Spaniard is a talented player and possesses the potential to become one of the best defenders in the world in the future. Therefore, he would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services.
