Wenger confirms fresh injury blow for Arsenal
Arsene Wenger has confirmed that David Ospina was forced to miss the West Ham game last night due to a muscle injury.
Ospina was expected to start against the Hammers in the continued absence of Petr Cech but rumours began circulating on Wednesday morning that the Colombian was a major doubt for the game.
It was initially reported that Ospina was struggling with a back problem that he suffered during the 2-2 draw with Manchester City last weekend.
Speaking shortly before kick off last night, Wenger confirmed to reporters that Ospina had been ruled out of the West Ham game with a muscle injury but he didn’t specify which part of the body was injured.
It’s the latest injury blow for us as Laurent Koscielny, Lucas Perez and Santi Cazorla were also missing last night along with Cech and Ospina.
Arsene is quoted as saying by the Express:
“Ospina is out with a muscle injury he got against Manchester City,”
“Petr Cech is not back so Martinez starts in goal tonight.”
With Cech and Ospina out, third-choice keeper Emiliano Martinez was handed his first league start of the season and the 24-year-old put in a solid shift to keep a clean sheet during the 3-0 win.
It’s not clear how long Ospina will be out for but Wenger suggested at his press conference earlier this week that Cech could make his comeback for the trip to Crystal Palace on Monday.
Even if Cech isn’t passed fit, I’d probably still prefer Martinez to start against the Eagles over Ospina as they are dangerous in the air and from set pieces and Martinez is far better at coming for crosses than the South American.
