Arsenal are plotting an audacious swoop to sign Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães in the summer, according to Fichajes.

Since joining Newcastle from Ligue 1 side Lyon in 2022, Guimarães has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League over the last four and a half seasons.

He has made 191 appearances for the Tyneside outfit, providing 62 goal contributions, including 16 this season, while playing a key part in their surge in recent seasons.

The 28-year-old most notably captained the Tyneside club to a historic Carabao Cup victory over Liverpool on March 16, 2025, a day he described as the ‘best day of my life’.

Guimarães is also a regular in Brazil’s national team setup and, barring any significant injury scare, looks on course to make Carlo Ancelotti’s final World Cup squad.

With significant experience at both club and international levels, combined with outstanding footballing ability and strong leadership qualities, he looks to be a perfect fit to improve Arsenal’s midfield, and it’s no surprise he’s being linked with a move to the Emirates.

This is according to Fichajes, which claims that Arsenal are plotting an audacious swoop to sign Guimarães next summer to reinforce their squad.

The report adds that Mikel Arteta is looking to strengthen his midfield with a combative profile capable of orchestrating play between the attack and defence and views the Brazilian’s qualities as a perfect fit to help them compete for major honours.

Guimarães would be a perfect fit for Arsenal

However, a deal won’t be easy due to his importance to Newcastle, who are not under pressure to sell unless they receive a significant offer in the region of £86m, with the Gunners now exploring potential avenues to complete the deal, Fichajes adds.

Comparatively, Squawka’s comparison matrix shows that Guimarães ranks favourably alongside Arsenal’s midfield duo of Martin Zubimendi and Declan Rice.

While the Gunner’s pair lead in on-ball metrics like passes and touches, the Brazilian boasts higher numbers in several off-ball stats, such as contested duels (279) and contested ground duels (246).

He also has a higher take-on pass percentage, which explains why he is Eddie Howe’s go-to outlet during buildup. His sharp vision has seen him rank higher in through passes (19) and long-ball accuracy (62.71%) than Rice and Zubimendi.

Guimarães would undoubtedly be a solid addition to Arteta’s midfield, but whether Arsenal are willing to match Newcastle’s £86m valuation remains to be seen.
