William Saliba sets sights on ending Arsenal trophy wait
William Saliba has opened up on his growing frustration with Arsenal’s lack of silverware, making it clear the squad is hungry to change that this season.
The defender admitted that falling short in recent campaigns has left a deep mark on the group but he’s desperate to end their trophy drought this year.
Arsenal took a big step in the Carabao Cup with a 3-2 semi-final win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The result gives them a narrow lead ahead of the second leg at the Emirates on February 3.
The Gunners are also in a strong position in the Premier League title race. They sit six points clear at the top of the table after an impressive run of form.
In Europe, Arsenal have also made a bright start to their Champions League campaign. They currently lead the overall table, adding to the sense of belief around the squad.
An FA Cup fourth round tie against League One side Wigan is also on the horizon. That match offers another chance for Arsenal to move closer to silverware this season.
Near misses fuel Arsenal hunger
Saliba explained that he’s ‘tired’ of missing out on silverware but the pain of past near misses is now serving as motivation.
He believes those experiences have helped shape a stronger mindset within the group. According to the centre back, the players no longer want excuses or close calls.
“I’m tired to finish the season without nothing in my pocket,” the Frenchman said.
“So now we have four competitions to win.
“My pocket was empty last year and now we want to win everything, Carabao, FA Cup, Champions League, Premier League.
“Of course it’s not easy to say it but we want to prove it on the pitch and we will give everything to win every title.“
His words reflect a clear shift in thinking among the Arsenal squad. There is now a strong focus on turning promise into trophies at the end of the season.
Focus turns to Forest test
Attention now switches back to league action with a tricky trip to Nottingham Forest. Arsenal travel to the City Ground aiming to protect their lead at the top of the table.
Forest are known to be tough at home, making it a serious test for Arteta’s side. Maintaining momentum will be key as the fixtures continue to come thick and fast.
