[Ratings] Arsenal 1-2 Wolves: Xhaka & Aubameyang woeful for toothless Gunners
It was another night to forget at the Emirates as Arsenal slumped to a hugely disappointing 2-1 defeat to Wolves.
The visitors started the brighter of the two sides and opened the scoring midway through the first half when Pedro Neto was on hand to slot home after Wolves had hit the bar.
Arsenal levelled things up almost straight away when Gabriel powered home a header from a Willian cross to make it 1-1 in the 30th minute and I hoped we’d push on to take control of the game.
However, Wolves resorted their lead just before half-time when Daniel Podence made it 2-1 following some woeful Arsenal defending while Bernd Leno will also feel he should have done better.
We had a couple of decent chances to equalise in the second half with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missing the best opportunity as Wolves held on to consign Arsenal to our third consecutive home league defeat.
These are my ratings:
Leno 5/10 | Should have done much better for the second Wolves goal.
Bellerin 5/10 | Tried to get involved going forward but far too many aimless crosses into the box. Struggled against Podence and Neto too.
Gabriel 6/10 | Lovely header to make it 1-1 but could have done more to prevent Podence making it 2-1. Lucky not to give away a penalty.
Luiz 6/10 | Involved in a sickening clash of heads early on and should have been immediately subbed. Was eventually taken off at half time.
Tierney 5/10 | Roasted by Troare for the first goal and was given a tough time but the pace Wolves attacker all night.
Xhaka 4/10 | Also got twisted up by Troare in the build-up to their second and was badly exposed in midfield all night. Couldn’t cope with the Wolves counter attacks.
Ceballos 5/10 | Failed to take any sort of control of the game. He’s not great defensively and doesn’t add any creativity…so what does Ceballos bring?
Willock 5/10 | A few half-decent runs with the ball but not much else. Didn’t take his chance to shine when it mattered.
Willian 5/10 | Lovely cross set-up Gabriel for the goal but was otherwise useless. Subbed early in the second half. Where is the player who shone for Chelsea last year?
Saka 5/10 | Missed a good chance to equalise and didn’t get much joy down the left flank.
Aubameyang 4/10 | Missed a great chance to equalise but headed wide. Another frustrating night for the skipper. Worrying form continues. The worst part is he doesn’t look like he’s trying or is interested anymore.
Subs:
Holding 5/10 | Struggled with the pace any movement of the Wolves attack.
Nelson 5/10 | Woeful set-pieces and blazed a decent chance over the bar.
Lacazette N/A | On too late.
