Video: Watford 2-1 Arsenal: Controversy at Vicarage Road as Arsenal crash
There was controversy at Vicarage Road as Watford came from a goal down to score a late winner and secure a 2-1 victory over a sloppy Arsenal side this evening.
We opened the scoring just five minutes before the break as Per Mertesacker rose high to head home from a corner in the 39th minute for what was his first league goal in almost four years.
Alex Iwobi could have made it 2-0 midway through the second half but his shot was well saved while Ozil should certainly have doubled our advantage but he fluffed a great chance when clean through.
Predictably, we rued those missed chances as Watford were awarded a controversial penalty just a few minutes later. Richarlison blatantly dived under minimal contact from Bellerin.
Deeny stepped up and made it 1-1 in the 71st minute with Cech once again going the wrong way [will he ever save a penalty!?].
To make matters worse, there was time left for the officials to really screw us as Tom Cleverely slammed home a loose ball in injury time but replays showed a Watford player was just offside in the build-up.
We were far from our best today but the penalty decision changed the game in Watford’s favour and they got another bit of luck for the late winner.
