Wenger Lining-Up Shock Target To Replace City-Bound Sagna – Report
An interesting report coming from the Telegraph this evening with the newspaper claiming that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is considering James Milner as a surprise replacement for Manchester City-bound Bacary Sagna.
Sagna looks set to leave after failing to come to terms over a contract extension, with widespread reports today stating that the Frenchman has agreed a three-year deal worth around £6m-per-season at City.
The deal will also include a sizeable signing on bonus and for a player that is 31 and will have no sell-on value, I think Arsenal are doing the right thing in refusing to match such an offer.
However, Sagna’s exit leaves a huge void to be filled and the Telegraph seem to believe that Arsene may have a surprise in store for us, as they are reporting that the boss is giving serious consideration to converting James Milner to a right-back!
Milner is pushing to leave the Etihad this summer in search of regular first team football and I was as surprised as anyone when we were linked with him earlier this week, as I failed to see how he would get into Arsenal’s midfielder anymore than he does City’s.
But it seems Wenger has other plans as the newspaper claims that Milner is one of the options being talked about as a possible replacement for Sagna, and the boss is apparently mulling over a £10m swoop.
The 28-year-old has filled in at right-back in the past but has never played there for any length of time, so it would be a huge gamble if you ask me. Obviously Arsene has a decent track record of converting players, with Lauren and Kieran Gibbs both recent examples of him turning midfielders into full-backs, but I’m really not sold on the idea of Milner.
We’re so close to having a title-winning team and I just don’t see the point in taking such a gamble when other options such as Serge Aurier are available at a similar price. Milner is a hard worker and would be a useful squad player as a midfielder, but as a right-back? Not for me.
