Pundit slams Arsenal’s Raya for poor display vs Brighton

Former forward turned pundit Clinton Morrison has slammed Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya for a ‘disappointing’ display against Brighton and Hove Albion.

After winning the Premier League title last term, the Gunners enjoyed a stellar start this season. Following a comfortable victory over Napoli in the opening Champions League fixture, they overcame Ipswich Town’s challenge in the Carabao Cup third round.

Mikel Arteta’s side even won the first four league matches before suffering a surprising 3-0 defeat to the Seagulls on Saturday. They looked uncomfortable in front of Brighton’s press and ultimately failed to take control of the game.

Following Manchester City’s victory over Sunderland on Sunday, Arsenal have slipped down to second position, with the Citizens at the top with 15 points from five games.

Now, on Premier League Productions, Morrison said (via Metro) that Arsenal haven’t been this bad for a long time, but Brighton deserve some credit as Arteta’s side have enjoyed a bright start this season.

The former striker singled out Raya’s performance and said that the Spaniard has been outstanding since joining from Brentford, but he made some ‘important mistakes’ vs Brighton, which is very unusual for him.

Brighton are a good team with a good manager, and it was a reality check for the Emirates club as defending the Premier League title won’t be straightforward.

Morrison said:

“David Raya, who has been outstanding, he did make some important mistakes. It was very unusual, some of his distribution and stuff like that. Disappointing.

“It’s a bit of a reality check for Arsenal. It’s not going to be easy to retain the Premier League and it’s a hard place to go, Brighton, it’s always difficult and they’re a good team with a good manager.”

Raya has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League and played a key role in helping Arsenal become English champions last term.

Moreover, he was a part of the Spanish national team, who won the World Cup in the USA this summer. But he didn’t play a minute.

Kepa Arrizabalaga joined last year to support his compatriot, while Arsenal signed Illan Meslier this summer to add further depth to the goalkeeping department.

Meanwhile, following the conclusion of the long international break, Arsenal are set to face Leeds United in the Premier League next month.
