Arsenal eye move to sign Feyenoord’s Gjivai Zechiël

Arsenal are reportedly weighing up a swoop to sign Feyenoord midfielder Gjivai Zechiël, as per Caught Offside.

The 22-year-old started his youth career at Swift Boys before spending time with XerxesDZB and Sparta Rotterdam. He joined the Eredivisie giants’ academy at the age of 14.

After coming through their youth system, the youngster made his first-team debut in 2023. However, he initially struggled to break into the starting line-up; as a result, he went out on loan on a couple of occasions to play regularly and develop his career.

Zechiël showed glimpses of his qualities for FC Utrecht last term, making 15 goal contributions in 34 Eredivisie appearances. Upon returning to De Kuip, the youngster has enjoyed a promising start this season, scoring five goals and registering four assists in seven league appearances.

Moreover, Zechiël has been helping his side mount a title charge, sitting only two points behind league leaders AZ Alkmaar.

Now, Caught Offside claim that after monitoring his development closely, Arsenal have expressed their interest in signing him and could make a move in January.

Chelsea have also been keeping a close eye on his development ahead of a potential swoop. On the other hand, LOSC Lille wanted to sign Zechiël this summer and launched a formal proposal.

Zechiël to Arsenal

However, Feyenoord rejected the bid and eventually managed to keep him. With the player’s existing deal set to run until 2028, the Dutch giants are determined not to sell him cheaply and want around £26m[€30m].

Zechiël likes to be deployed in the box-to-box role but can provide cover in the deep-lying playmaker position if needed. He is quick, technically sound, and can play threading passes between the lines.

The Dutchman is a talented player and possesses high potential. Therefore, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services in January.

Meanwhile, following Christian Norgaard’s move to Everton, Arsenal have purchased Bruno Guimaraes this summer. So, Mikel Arteta currently has the Brazilian plus Declan Rice, Mikel Merino, Martin Zubimendi and Myles Lewis-Skelly as options to deploy in the deeper midfield positions.
