Odegaard receives plaudits after helping Arsenal beat Napoli
Former midfielder turned pundit Joe Cole has heaped praise on Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard after his ‘brilliant’ performance against Napoli in midweek.
Since moving to the Emirates Stadium from Real Madrid, the 27-year-old has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
However, although the Gunners won the title last campaign, the Norwegian struggled to showcase his best, with persistent fitness problems being one of the key reasons.
But following an excellent World Cup with Norway this summer, Odegaard has enjoyed a stellar start this season, scoring four goals in five appearances across all competitions.
The midfielder, valued at around £60m by Transfermarkt, even helped his side beat Napoli 1-0 by scoring the winner in the opening Champions League encounter last night.
Now, speaking on TNT Sports after the game, Cole says (via Metro) that Odegaard was ‘brilliant’ throughout the game and he has returned to his ‘very best’ following a dip in form last term.
The former midfielder further states that the Arsenal star is currently at the ‘peak of his powers’ and it is beautiful to watch.
Cole said:
“Martin Odegaard was brilliant all night. He is back to his very, very best. He is probably thinking even though they won the league last season, he didn’t have a good season personally. He looks like the player we admired 18 months ago, he was brilliant.
“Everything runs through Martin Odegaard. He can stand still and find space. He is at the peak of his powers and it is beautiful to watch. You can’t help but love watching him play his football.”
Odegaard receives plaudits
After winning the Premier League title last term, the Emirates club have enjoyed a promising start this season, winning the first three league matches.
Moreover, they have lifted the Community Shield by thrashing Manchester City 3-0 last month. So, the early signs suggest that Arsenal are capable of defending their Premier League title for the first time in the club’s history.
Meanwhile, Arsenal decided to refresh the squad this summer to continue the momentum. After letting Christian Norgaard leave, they have purchased Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United.
Moreover, following William Saliba and Jurrien Timber’s recent injury problems, Arsenal have bought Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa. Furthermore, they have signed Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier.
