Arsenal interested in Monza striker Gustavo Varela
Arsenal are reportedly interested in Monza striker Gustavo Varela, as per TEAMtalk.
The 21-year-old started his youth career at Miudos Talentosos before spending time with Sporting CP and PAOK. He joined SL Benfica’s academy back in 2022.
He made his first-team debut for the Eagles a couple of years later. However, the youngster struggled to break into the starting line-up. So, Varela joined Gil Vicente on loan last term to play regularly and develop his career.
After being impressed by his performances for Gil Vicente, Monza bought him last summer. He has enjoyed a stellar start in Serie A this season, scoring 11 goals and registering a solitary assist in 10 appearances across all competitions.
Varela has even been showcasing his goal-scoring prowess for a struggling Monza side, currently languishing in a relegation scrap.
Now, TEAMtalk state that after being impressed by the youngster’s recent eye-catching performances, Arsenal have expressed their interest in him and could make a concrete approach next year.
However, the North London club will have to overcome fierce competition to seal the deal as Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are also in this race. They sent scouts to watch him in action against Bologna last weekend.
Moreover, Newcastle United, Brighton and Hove Albion, Fulham and Brentford’s scouts also watched him closely vs Bologna. Other than the Premier League clubs, RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund and Atlético Madrid also sent scouts to watch him last weekend.
Varela to Arsenal
The report further state that Juventus, AC Milan, Napoli and Inter Milan have shown keen interest in him, while Portuguese national team boss Jorge Jesus is considering calling him up for the November international fixtures.
Having recently joined Monza, Varela still has a contract until 2030. Therefore, the Italian side are in a strong position to demand a sizable amount of money to sell him.
The 21-year-old is a 6ft 1in tall right-footed striker. He is a talented player and possesses high potential. Therefore, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services in January or next summer.
