Jack Wilshere Hits Back On Twitter At ‘Lies’ Over Fitness Fears
Arsenal midfielder has hit back at the Mirror newspaper for claiming he is fearing for his place in the England World Cup squad because of his fitness problems.
The Mirror newspaper ran a headline this morning stating that Wilshere was fearing for his World Cup place due to his on-going injury worries.
While the paper quotes Wilshere as saying he has to be on top form to secure a place in Hodgson’s squad due to the amount of competition in his position, there is nothing to suggest the player is concerned because of his fitness.
“You have seen over the last couple of months the talent there is, even in the under-21s.
“With Ravel Morrison and all these players coming through, you are never guaranteed [to go] and cannot rest on your laurels.”
“You are only as good as your last game, they say, so when the time comes, I have to be on top form, and there will be a lot of players looking to be as well.
“There are some big games coming up for the club at the moment, so I am just concentrating on that.
“That is where you are going to get into the England World Cup squad – by playing well for your club, then you are going to get picked for your country.” Wilshere is quoted as saying by the Mirror.
Wilshere hit back at the report on Twitter, saying:
@MirrorFootball good lie today on how I am worried about my fitness before the World Cup! Please let me know when actually said that?
— Jack Wilshere (@JackWilshere) November 21, 2013
The 21-year-old started against Chile on Friday night before coming on as a second half substitute against Germany on Tuesday, but has struggled for full fitness this season due to a persistent ankle problem.
Wilshere has been plagued by a series of ankle injuries over the past two years and surgery in the summer doesn’t appear to have had the desired effect in clearing the problems once and for all.
He failed to start any of Arsenal’s three games in the lead up to the international break and boss Arsene Wenger pleaded with Roy Hodgson so only use the youngster in one of England’s two friendlies. However, Hodgson chose to ignore this request and reports today claim that Wilshere aggravated his ankle injury once again against the Germans.
While Jack is publicly not going to admit it, but I think privately he must be worried that his ankle injuries could see him miss out on the World Cup, or perhaps see him miss out on a starting spot.
*UPDATE* Following Wilshere’s tweet, the Mirror appear to have changed their headline and Jack has deleted his comment. The power of social media!
