Arsenal secure quarter-final spot with Brighton victory
Arsenal advanced into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after defeating Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Gunners were made to work hard by a spirited Brighton side, but second half goals from Ethan Nwaneri and Bukayo Saka sealed the win for Mikel Arteta’s men.
Nwaneri opened the scoring early in the second half after a fine attacking move, before Saka came off the bench to add a second late on.
It was another night where Arsenal’s mix of youth and experience came together to deliver a composed performance.
Kepa Arrizabalaga – 8
Produced a vital early save to deny Georginio Rutter, setting the tone for his night. Although his passing was sometimes uncertain, his overall display was steady and confident. Our man of the match today.
Ben White – 7
Looked sharp and energetic throughout the game. Combined well with Max Dowman down the right flank and showed good defensive awareness when needed.
Cristhian Mosquera – 7
Continued to impress with his calm presence and strong tackling. Apart from one moment of hesitation in the second half, he remained composed and reliable.
Pierre Hincapie – 7
Made his first full start for the club and handled the occasion with maturity. Comfortable on the ball and aggressive in his duels, he offered balance at the back.
Myles Lewis-Skelly – 7
Started nervously but settled well as the match progressed. Provided the assist for Nwaneri’s opener and displayed great energy in midfield.
Midfield control and creativity tested
Mikel Merino – 7
Influential in the midfield battle, dictating the tempo and linking play. His clever flick initiated the move that led to Arsenal’s first goal.
Christian Norgaard – 5
Struggled to impose himself in the centre of the pitch. Offered little defensive cover and lacked creativity going forward.
Ethan Nwaneri – 7
Started quietly but grew into the game after scoring. His goal lifted the team’s confidence and highlighted his natural finishing ability.
Max Dowman – 7
Became the youngest player to start a competitive match for Arsenal. Showed confidence on the ball and caused problems for Brighton with his dribbling. Earned a standing ovation when substituted for Saka.
Andre Harriman-Annous – 6
Made his senior debut and worked hard off the ball. Though raw, his effort paid off when his shot led to Saka’s goal after Brighton’s goalkeeper spilled it.
Eberechi Eze – 6
Displayed his class at times but struggled to create clear chances. Targeted by Brighton supporters due to his Crystal Palace past and replaced by Trossard late on.
Substitutes make late impact
Gabriel Magalhaes – 6
Added physicality and aerial strength from set pieces after coming on. Helped keep Brighton’s attack quiet in the final stages.
Jurrien Timber – 7
Produced an exciting solo run that opened up space for Harriman-Annous in the build-up to Saka’s goal. Looked sharp and composed.
Bukayo Saka – 7
Took his chance with precision to secure Arsenal’s victory. Provided energy and drive after coming off the bench.
It was a strong collective display from Arsenal, who balanced youth with experience to good effect.
The result sees them progress confidently into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals – where they’ll now host Crystal Palace – as they continue their push for silverware this season.
