Arsenal now eyeing move for Como centre-back Jacobo Ramon

Arsenal are keeping tabs on Como’s highly rated centre-back Jacobo Ramon ahead of a potential swoop this summer, according to The Athletic.

The requirement for fresh cover at centre-back is no longer simply a matter of long-term planning; it’s now become an urgent necessity following William Saliba’s injury setback.

The France international was forced off after just 30 minutes of his country’s 2-0 defeat by Spain in the FIFA World Cup semi-finals, after experiencing discomfort in his back.

While the full severity of the 25-year-old’s problem has yet to be confirmed, a statement released on Arsenal’s official website has indicated that Saliba is expected to spend an extended period on the sidelines.

‘Subsequent specialist reviews on William’s return to London this week have confirmed that he has suffered a back injury which will require a period of rehabilitation,’ the report reads.

‘William’s rehabilitation will commence immediately, with continual management of his injury, and he is expected to be out of action for an extended period. ‘

As a result, the club have been exploring several centre-back options, with reports via Arsenal Station revealing that Arsenal have shown a tentative interest in Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa.

‘Magnificent’ centre-back

The latest centre-back on Arsenal’s radar is Ramon, as per The Athletic, which claims that the north London giants have added the 6ft 5in centre-back to their shortlist of targets for the ongoing transfer window.

The Premier League champions have been keeping close tabs on the Spanish U21 international ahead of a potential swoop, but they face stern competition from London rivals Chelsea, according to the report.

However, the Athletic adds that Arsenal face a major hurdle in pursuing a deal due to Madrid’s buyback clause and 50% ownership of Ramón’s economic rights.

Ramón emerged as one of Europe’s outstanding young central defenders in Serie A and across Europe last season, and it’s no surprise he’s described as ‘magnificent’ by football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

The Spaniard produced outstanding defensive numbers, winning 182 duels while recording 116 recoveries and 122 clearances. Ramón also excelled aerially, coming out on top in 113 aerial duels.

He is equally efficient in possession, as evidenced by his 91.4% pass completion rate, while his 2,526 touches underline his composure on the ball, making him an excellent fit for possession-based sides like Arsenal.

With four years left in his contract, Arsenal will need to submit a concrete offer, as Como will likely demand a fee well above his £25m Transfermarkt valuation.
