Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has claimed that Arsenal star Viktor Gyokeres is the Premier League ‘signing of the season’.

After finishing second in the last three consecutive Premier League campaigns, the Gunners decided to reinforce the centre-forward position by purchasing the Swede from Sporting CP last summer.

Compared to his form over the last two seasons, the 27-year-old has delivered inconsistent performances this term, scoring 21 goals and registering three assists in 54 appearances across all competitions.

Still, he has helped the North London club win the Premier League title. Moreover, he has guided his side to reach the Champions League final, and they are set to face reigning European champions, Paris Saint-Germain, next weekend.

Now, speaking on his BBC podcast (via Metro), Rooney states that Gyokeres has made a huge impact for Arsenal this campaign, so he is the Premier League ‘signing of the season’.

Although Granit Xhaka has displayed brilliant performances for Sunderland, helping his side qualify for next season’s Europa League, Gyokeres has added to the Arsenal team, which they had been missing over the last few years.

When asked, ” Who’s the Premier League signing of the season, Rooney said:

“I think Viktor Gyokeres. Granit Xhaka has been brilliant for Sunderland but look at what Gyokeres has brought to Arsenal, it’s exactly what they’ve needed.

“Finishing second over the last three years, I think he’s given Arsenal something a bit different and that’s been a big factor in them winning the Premier League.”

Pundit heaps praise on Gyokeres

When Gyokeres first joined Arsenal, he looked a bit rusty as he did not have a full pre-season. However, the 27-year-old was heavily criticised, with many suggesting that he would not be able to help Arsenal win the title.

As the season progressed, though, Gyokeres regained his fitness and eventually helped Arsenal win the trophy they had been craving for the last two decades.

However, Mikel Arteta is reportedly looking to add more firepower to the frontline as Gabriel Jesus is expected to leave this summer, with his existing deal set to run until 2027. Moreover, Kai Havertz has had fitness problems in recent years.

Atlético Madrid star Julian Alvarez has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium, and it is going to be interesting to see who the North London club eventually sign to bolster the attack.
