Arsenal interested in signing Atalanta star Ederson
Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Atalanta star Ederson, as per transfer journalist Graeme Bailey.
Thomas Partey’s career at the Gunners appeared to be all but over at the end of last season following an injury-plagued campaign. It was reported this summer that Mikel Arteta decided to let the Ghanaian leave the club after being frustrated by his constant fitness problems.
So, the Spanish boss wanted to sign a new deep-lying playmaker as a potential replacement for the 31-year-old. However, the North London club eventually opted not to sign a new holding midfielder before the deadline, instead, Mikel Merino was signed from Real Sociedad. The Spaniard is comfortable playing in the box-to-box role.
Partey eventually stayed at the club and has been playing regularly this season. But, with his current contract set to expire at the end of this season, Arsenal have seemingly started exploring options to sign a new midfielder next year.
Jorginho has also entered the final year of his current deal and could leave the club as a free agent at the end of this campaign.
Ederson to Arsenal
Reporting on TBR Football, Bailey has stated that Arsenal have registered their interest in Ederson to bolster the engine room and could make a concrete approach in 2025.
Atalanta slapped a £50m price tag on the Brazilian’s head this summer but no club eventually opted to sign him by matching the valuation. The midfielder’s current contract will run until 2027 so La Dea would be in a strong position to stay firm on their valuation next summer.
The journalist says that apart from Arsenal, other Premier League clubs like Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Aston Villa are also keen on signing him. Therefore, the Gunners will have to overcome stiff competition to lure the Brazilian to the Emirates Stadium next year.
Ederson is a robust defensive midfielder. He is strong, dynamic and is excellent in defensive contributions. Moreover, he is comfortable with the ball at his feet and has an eye for long-range passing.
It is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to make a concrete approach to sign the South American to strengthen the midfield department.
