Video: Basel 1-4 Arsenal: Perez treble secures top spot
Arsenal pulled off a minor miracle as a Lucas Perez hat-trick helped us to a 4-1 win over Basel to finish top of our Champions League group.
We started well and broke the deadlock inside the opening ten minutes when Alexis Sanchez found Kieran Gibbs with a superb ball and the full-back’s cross was tapped home by Lucas Perez.
The duo then linked up again as Perez was on hand to poke in to the net after Gibbs’s shot was well saved and we took a 2-0 advantage in to the half time interval.
Perez then completed a surprise hat-trick just minutes in to the second half and unbelievably it was Gibbs again with the assist as his pass made it’s way through to the striker who fired home in to the bottom corner.
If the three points weren’t already secured we made sure as a superb move involving Sanchez and Mesut Ozil led to Alex Iwobi grabbing a much-needed goal to make it 4-0.
Unfortunately we failed to hold on to the clean sheet as an error from Rob Holding allowed Doumbia to score a lovely goal in the 78th minute.
However, the 4-1 win paired with PSG’s shock 2-2 draw at home to Ludogorets means we finish top of our group so fingers crossed we can get a decent draw in the knockout stages.
