Arsenal Eyeing Surprise £10m Swoop On Rivals – Report
Arsenal are eyeing a shock £10m swoop on Manchester United for out-of-favour centre-back Jonny Evans this summer, according to the Mirror.
Evans has been on United’s books his entire professional career having come through the clubs youth ranks but has now fallen down the pecking order.
Louis van Gaal is expected to bring in at least one new centre-back this summer which will see Evans out in the cold leading to speculation he’ll be on the move.
The Mirror claim that Arsene Wenger is still keen on bringing in another central defender himself this summer and is now eyeing a surprise move for the Northern Irishman.
West Brom were thought to be leading the chase but the paper suggest they are stalling over United’s £10m asking price which has opened the door for us to make a potential swoop.
This isn’t the first time we’ve been linked with Evans but I’d be very surprised if anything came of this. The 27-year-old is highly unlikely to swap the United bench for ours as I don’t for one minute think he’ll get in ahead of Koscielny or Mertesacker, not to mention Gabriel.
Then there’s the question of whether United would even do business with us, so I just don’t see any potential deal happening here.
I’m still surprised by the number of newspapers saying Arsene wants to sign a centre-back as I didn’t expect that to be an area we’d add to this summer after signing Gabriel in January.
If we do bring someone in, then I expect it might mean Calum Chambers is heading out on loan or perhaps Mertesacker could be going back to Germany with Gabriel made first choice alongside Kos next year.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see…..
