Arsenal eye move to sign Sturm Graz’s Luca Weinhandl
Arsenal are reportedly keeping a close eye on Sturm Graz youngster Luca Weinhandl, as per Caught Offside.
The 17-year-old started his youth career at SV Wildon before joining Die Schwoazn’s academy at the age of six. After rising through their youth system, he made his first team debut earlier this year.
Having featured as a rotational option last campaign, the youngster has been playing regularly this term, making two goal contributions in 11 appearances across all competitions.
Now, Caught Offside claim that alongside bolstering the first team, Arsenal are also focusing on signing elite young players. Having recently signed Andria Bartishvili, Mikel Arteta’s side have identified Weinhandl as an ideal option to bolster the midfield pipeline.
The North London club sent scouts to watch him in action against Rapid Wien and LASK in the last two Austrian Bundesliga matches. They have even held initial talks over this deal.
Sturm Graz aren’t under any pressure to sell Weinhandl as the player isn’t pushing to leave. He is currently happy with his progress in the Austrian Bundesliga.
Still, the report state that Arsenal are confident of signing him and Sturm Graz are prepared to accept around £17m if they are forced to cash-in on him next year.
Weinhandl to Arsenal
Apart from the Emirates club, Aston Villa and Brighton and Hove Albion have also been keeping a close eye on his development before making a potential swoop.
CO claim that Arsenal are also interested in signing Leicester City midfielder Louis Page but Manchester United are currently leading the race.
Weinhandl is a 6ft 3in tall right-footed box-to-box midfielder by trait. The Austrian is a highly talented player and possesses the potential to reach the top.
Therefore, he would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal with a view to the long-term future should they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to lure him to the Emirates Stadium by defeating other Premier League clubs in this race.
Meanwhile, following a comfortable victory over Ipswich Town in the Carabao Cup, Arsenal are set to face Brighton in the Premier League this weekend.
