Arsenal agree £45m deal to sign Piero Hincapie
Arsenal have reached an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen for the signing of defender Piero Hincapie, according to Fabrizio Romano.
As per the transfer expert, the move will be an initial season-long loan, which includes an obligation to buy next summer. The total package is worth around £45 million with a ten per cent sell-on clause.
Reports suggest the structure of the deal will see Arsenal pay a £5 million loan fee. The mandatory purchase option in 2026 is valued at £40 million.
The 23-year-old has already agreed personal terms with the north London side. Hincapie will sign a five-year deal next summer once the permanent switch is activated.
Hincapie is set to fly to London from Germany this weekend. He will undergo his medical before finalising his transfer to the Emirates Stadium.
The South American’s arrival will allow Jakub Kiwior to leave Arsenal. The Polish defender is joining Porto in a deal worth £21.6 million, potentially rising to £23 million.
Strengthening Arteta’s defensive options
Mikel Arteta has been keen to strengthen his backline and has already added Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia earlier in the window.
Hincapie becomes Arsenal’s eighth addition of the summer. The club have already secured the services of Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Christian Nørgaard, Cristhian Mosquera, Viktor Gyökeres and Eberechi Eze.
The Ecuador international has been on Arsenal’s radar for some time. His ability to play both as a left-sided centre-back and left-back makes him a versatile option for Arteta.
He first joined Bayer Leverkusen in 2021 after leaving Argentinian side CA Talleres. Since then, he has built a reputation as one of the most talented defenders in European football.
Hincapie’s record in Germany and for Ecuador
Over four seasons in the Bundesliga, Hincapie has made 166 appearances for Leverkusen. He has also played 46 times for the Ecuador national team.
The defender featured in both of Leverkusen’s opening matches this season before Arsenal reached an agreement for his transfer.
Hincapie’s signing is viewed as a major boost for Arsenal. His arrival gives Arteta greater depth and balance as the club looks to compete on multiple fronts.
