Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny has offered a worrying update on his ankle injury after posting a photo on Twitter of his foot in a protective boot.

Elneny was forced off at half-time during our 2-0 FA Cup win over Sutton United last Monday after picking up an ankle problem during the opening forty-five minutes.

The Egyptian international was initially able to carry on after receiving treatment from the physio but he was eventually replaced by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at the break.

Arsene Wenger gave little away about the midfielders condition after the game other than to say we’d have to wait for scans to be done before the full extent of the injury was known.

Reports in midweek then suggested that Elneny was facing at least three weeks on the sidelines but this hasn’t been verified as Arsene didn’t hold a press conference today.

However, the 24-year-old’s update on social media has sparked fears he could be out for even longer as Elneny took to Twitter this afternoon to post a photo of his left ankle in a protective boot.

It’s still not known how long Elneny will be out for but this isn’t an encouraging sign and the last thing we need is to lose him for a prolonged period as our options in midfield are limited.

Aaron Ramsey is still out with a calf injury while Santi Cazorla has been ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing another operation on his ankle.

With Elneny now also on the sidelines it leaves us with Francis Coquelin and Granit Xhaka as our central midfield options, although Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has filled in well recently so the boss could also call upon him for our trip to Liverpool next weekend.
