Arsene Wenger confirms fresh injury concern following Spurs draw
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed that we’ve suffered yet another injury concern with Nacho Monreal missing Saturday’s North London Derby with a calf problem.
Monreal has been an established member of Arsene’s starting eleven over the past 18 months and the Spaniard was once again expected to keep his place in the back four against Spurs yesterday.
However, the 30-year-old was a surprising omission from the line-up when the teams were announced an hour before kick-off, with Kieran Gibbs starting at the back and Nacho among the substitutes.
Speaking after our 2-2 draw at White Hart Lane, Wenger explained Monreal’s absence after telling reporters the full-back is carrying a slight calf injury and with games coming thick and fast, the boss decided not to risk him against Spurs.
Arsene is quoted as saying by the Express:
“We play every three games at the moment, we have some knocks like Nacho Monreal who is not 100% so you try to freshen up.
“He has a slight calf problem.”
It sounds like the injury isn’t serious but we’ve heard that before only for the player to be sidelined for an extended period so we’ll have to wait and see whether Monreal is passed fit to face Hull City in our FA Cup replay on Tuesday night.
However, there’s no point taking any risk with him as Kieran Gibbs is a more than able deputy and performed extremely well in his absence on Saturday, so i wouldn’t mind seeing him given a bit of a run to allow Nacho to recharge his batteries.
