Arsenal conduct checks to sign Aleksandar Stankovic
Arsenal have reportedly ‘conducted checks’ on a deal to sign Aleksandar Stankovic, as per TEAMtalk.
The 20-year-old is the son of Inter Milan legend Dejan Stankovic. After coming through the Nerazzurri’s youth system, he failed to break into the first team squad. So, he joined Swiss side FC Luzern on loan to play regularly and develop his career.
Eventually, Inter decided to sell him permanently to Club Brugge last summer, and they included a buyback clause. He flourished in his career in the Pro League last campaign, scoring eight goals and registering four assists in 44 appearances across all competitions.
Having shown glimpses of his qualities at Jan Breydel Stadium, Stankovic has secured his place in the Serbian national team’s starting line-up.
Now, TEAMtalk claim that the youngster’s recent eye-catching performances have attracted the attention of Arsenal, and they have even ‘conducted checks’ to seal the deal.
Moreover, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United expressed their interest in him, while Chelsea have made contact to learn about the details of sealing the deal.
Stankovic was open to playing in the Premier League. However, Inter have decided to bring him back by triggering his just more than £20m buy-back clause.
Stankovic to Arsenal
Stankovic is a defensive midfielder by trait, but is efficient in a box-to-box role. Furthermore, he can provide cover in the centre-back position if needed.
The Serbian can play threading passes between the lines, has an eye for long-range passing, is excellent at taking set-pieces, reads the game well, and is also efficient in defensive contributions.
Arsenal currently have Declan Rice, Mikel Merino, Martin Zubimendi, and Christian Norgaard as options to deploy in the deeper midfield positions. However, Norgaard failed to impress during his debut campaign, while Merino struggled with fitness problems last term.
So, it appears Mikel Arteta is keen on purchasing a new midfielder this summer. A host of names have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium in recent weeks, with Sandro Tonali being one of them.
Stankovic is a talented player and would have been a shrewd long-term acquisition for Arsenal had they managed to secure his service this summer.
