Arsenal submit bid to sign Newcastle’s Guimaraes

Arsenal have reportedly launched a formal proposal to sign Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes, as per Brazilian outlet RTI Esporte.

After cashing-in on Leandro Trossard, the Gunners have replaced the Belgian by purchasing Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge this summer. However, they are said to be keen on signing a new marquee left-winger.

Moreover, following Christian Norgaard’s struggles to break into Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up, Arsenal are considering signing a new midfielder. A few names have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium, with Ayyoub Bouaddi and Alex Scott being among them.

However, RTI Esporte report that Guimaraes is Arsenal’s priority target and they have already agreed on personal terms with the Brazilian international.

The Gunners previously launched a formal proposal worth around £64m[€75m], but Newcastle rejected the offer as they wanted more. Now, Arsenal have submitted a fresh £72m[€85m] bid.

The structure of the proposal is £68m[€80m] in guaranteed fee plus £4m in bonuses. Arsenal are even confident that this is going to be enough to convince the Magpies to let him leave.

Guimaraes is a right-footed box-to-box midfielder by trait but is also comfortable in the defensive midfield position. He is quick, strong, technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, and is efficient at taking set-pieces.

Moreover, the South American is good in the air, has the tendency to chip in with some important goals, and works extremely hard without possession.

The 28-year-old is a Premier League-proven player and is currently at the prime stage of his career. So, he would be a great coup for Arsenal should they purchase him.

The North London club revamped the engine room by purchasing Norgaard and Martin Zubimendi last summer. However, Zubimendi displayed inconsistent performances, while Mikel Merino struggled with fitness problems.

So, Arteta was forced to use Declan Rice regularly. He has taken on an enormous workload over the last 12 months. Therefore, signing a new midfielder would be the right decision for Arsenal.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to lure Guimaraes to the Emirates Stadium ahead of next season.
