Arsenal plot swoop to sign Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins

Arsenal are reportedly weighing up a move to sign Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, as per The Sun.

Since moving to Villa Park from Brentford back in 2020, the 30-year-old has established himself as an undisputed starter, helping his side win the Europa League last campaign.

The forward has showcased his productivity in recent seasons, scoring 21 goals and registering five assists in 55 appearances across all competitions last term.

Watkins even guided Unai Emery’s side to finish fourth in the Premier League, meaning they have qualified for next season’s Champions League.

After proving his worth in club football, he secured his place in England’s World Cup squad, but he remained on the periphery, failing to start any game.

Now, The Sun report that with Gabriel Jesus’ long-term future currently uncertain, Arsenal are considering signing a new striker to replace him and have earmarked Watkins as a key target.

They are monitoring his situation closely ahead of a potential swoop. However, the Gunners will have to overcome stiff competition to seal the deal as Manchester United are also keeping tabs on his current situation.

The Red Devils want a new striker as a potential replacement for Joshua Zirkzee, who has been attracting attention from Serie A.

Watkins to Arsenal

The report state that Fenerbahce were planning to sign Watkins by launching a £30m proposal, but Villa made it clear that they wouldn’t accept the offer. They want around £40m, with his current contract set to run until 2028.

Arsenal currently have Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres alongside Jesus as striker options. However, Havertz and Jesus have had fitness problems in recent times.

Although Gyokeres was Arsenal’s highest scorer last season, he displayed average performances. So, Mikel Arteta is seemingly planning to upgrade the frontline, and the Emirates club have been linked with a few names.

Watkins is a Premier League-proven player; therefore, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him. He is quick, strong, good in the air, efficient in holding up the play, and can finish off his chances.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services.
