Arsenal ‘closing’ in on a deal to sign Mikel Merino
Arsenal are reportedly ‘closing’ in on a deal to sign Real Sociedad star Mikel Merino this summer, as per the transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The Gunners have reportedly prioritised strengthening their engine room in this transfer window. Numerous names were previously mentioned as serious targets with Martin Zubimendi and Bruno Guimaraes being among them.
However, Merino is now emerging as the primary option. The midfielder has entered the final year of his current contract and doesn’t want to sign an extension with the Basque club to take the next step in his career. So, Real Sociedad are reportedly open to cashing in on him in fear of losing him for free next summer.
Writing on X, Romano has reported that Arsenal have opened negotiations with La Real over this deal and they are already close to securing his signature.
The journalist further claims that the Gunners are discussing the transfer fee worth more than £25m with Real Sociedad and they have already agreed on personal terms with the player.
Merino to Arsenal
Romano wrote:
“Arsenal are closing in on Mikel Merino deal as verbal agreement is now getting closer! Agreement in place on personal terms as Merino wants the move. Verbal discussions with Real Sociedad for package in excess of €30m, talks on to get the deal done.”
Merino, standing at 6ft 2in tall, is a technically gifted dynamic midfielder. He is comfortable receiving possession under pressure, can play threading passes between the lines and also has the ability to chip-in with some important goals. Additionally, he is excellent in the air, works extremely hard without possession and is also efficient in defensive contributions.
The 28-year-old has already showcased his qualities in La Liga and following that, he helped Spain win the European Championship last month. Moreover, he already has Premier League experience during his time with Newcastle United.
So, he would be a shrewd signing for Arsenal if they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club can eventually manage to secure his signature in this transfer window to reinforce their midfield department.
