Arsenal make £38.7m striker bid as agent holds talks – reports

By on May 23, 2016

According to Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri, Arsenal have submitted a huge £38.7m (€50m) offer for Spanish international striker Alvaro Morata.

Arsene Wenger has hinted he needs to dip in to the transfer market to bring in another front man after losing Danny Welbeck for the majority of next season with a serious knee injury and Morata has emerged as a prime target.

The Spanish hitman is currently on the books at Juventus but the Mirror reported over the weekend that Real Madrid have decided to activate a buyback option that they inserted in to his contract when they sold him to the Italians two years ago.

The La Liga giants then plan to sell Morata on at an immediate profit and the newspaper suggests that we are preparing a bumper contract for the 23-year-old worth around £155,000-a-week.

It appears things have started to move as well-known Italian journalist Tandredi Palmeri – who works with beIN Sports and Gazzetta dello Sport – claims that Arsenal have now tabled a £38.7m (€50m) bid directly to Madrid and they are considering the offer.

Here is Palmeri breaking the news on Twitter:

Spanish outlet AS are also reporting that Morata’s agent has been in talks with Madrid officials today to confirm their intention to re-sign/sell him and they state that Arsenal are his most likely destination.

So this rumour is certainly hotting up and it looks like Arsene is prepared to spend BIG money on bringing Morata to the Emirates this summer.

However, I’m still not convinced it’s the right move for us. For that sort of money, I’d expect a proven goal-scorer who’ll get us 25+ a season. Morata only managed to score 7 Serie A goals for champions Juventus last season and has never hit double figures in any senior season in his career.

He’s a huge talent, no doubt about that, but I’m just concerned that we’re going to spend around £40m on a player that isn’t the prolific hitman we desperately need to turn us in to champions.

I’d much prefer we went all-out to sign someone far more proven like Higuain, Benzema or  Aubameyang – who all hit over 25 goals last season. Let’s be honest, Giroud got 16 Premier League goals last season and was hammered. Can you imagine the criticism if he got 7 like Morata?

Morata started very few games for Juve( many less than Giroud started for us). That he is third in line behind Dynala and Mandzukic might be a concern but his goals per minute played is very good in the most defensive league in the world. Higuain is the head honcho in Serie A but may not be available and Morata has pushed Costa out of the Spanish Euro squad. And he got the winner in the Spanish Cup on Saturday and was very good in the CL last year.
People criticise Wenger for being a skinflint and then criticise him for overpaying. Don’t you think he will have scouted Morata innumerable times. This boy needs to start and then he will explode.

I certainly agree with what you’re saying. People should also understand that its difficult to get players. Madrid may not be selling Benzema. Napoli still thinking of keeping Higauin. Like Wenger said, its about players being available in the market.. So far Morata is available and his a better finisher than Giroud thats fosho though.

Morata is an outstanding talent and has scored goals in teams that are not set up fully to utilise his talents. Look at his svoring at youth level to see his potential.

If you want a comparison, look at Alan Shearer’s goalscoring record before he joined Blackburn. At Southampton he only managed 23 goals in 118 games over four years. He moved to Blackburn for big money, everything set up to suit his game and high expectation. At that point his goalscoring ability exploded and he emerged as a consistent, world-class striker and a true superstar. Morata has all the ability and is now at that stage and ready to go up a level…

Agree. Nor will I want him to. Pull all the stops and bring AUBAMEYANG. He is the quintessential PL striker – strong, skilfull and consistent.

I believe morata is a good player but honestly guys at the stage in which arsenal is right now we need a proven goal scorer. Am tired so seeing a one man striker who plays only one type of game just like giroud.we need quick thing, skillful, fast, and proven goal scorers. They are the ones that work for us. Look at theirry henry and other prolific strickers arsenal has had in the past.if i look at all those combination in a current player then i would tell wenger to pay that money for Aubemeyang…great player

Wenger needs to look at his philosophy. His passing game maybe a joy to watch but fans want to see a winning team repeatedly beaten for good football ie passing to eternity.
Until the passing game is modified rest assured it will be the sos same old story.Countless shots hitting the woodwork and dominating possession without winning.

It’s good you guys are talking about Henry here… Before Arsenal, Thiery was nothing… an unproven left winger for Juventus n Monaco before that.. dats d same with Morata.. 2014-15 season.. he scored more than 5 in d Champs league.. n 3 or 4 yrs ago.. he was a top scorer in an under 20 tournament with d likes of Isco n Koke supplying him… If we can’t get Aubameyang… Alvaro will get us goals n I predict an over 20 goals in d PL alone in his first season if he comes… ave watched him play n he is better dan Olivier by far… Let Arsene spend coz with d way he plays.. he will get the best out of Alexis n Mesut..

Exactly! Also keep in mind Aubameyang has stated numerous times that he wants to play in Spain. You then have Higuain who would cost prob £10m more but we would get less value as he is approaching 30, so Morata for me is a risk worth taking. when a young man can scored goals in champions league semis like he did against the biggest club in the world, that tells you something about his personality. He will not go missing in the big games like Giroud. I hope we can make it happen

I like Morata but would prefer to add Lacazette. Getting both would be best.
