‘Sign A New Contract? Why Not?’ Frenchman Hints At New Arsenal Deal
Olivier Giroud insists he wants to stay at Arsenal and is open to signing a new contract at the club, amid rumours he could be set to leave this summer.
Giroud has endured a difficult second season in north London following his move from Montpellier in 2012. While he’s contributed a more than reasonable return of 20 goals in 46 appearances, the 27-year-old has struggled for form at times and his season was rocked by claims of an affair back in February.
Arsene Wenger axed him following allegations he invited a model to his hotel room on the night before a Premier League match and there is little doubt his form has suffered since the news was leaked to the press.
Speculation in recent weeks has suggested that Giroud’s wife is keen for them to move back to France and with at least one striker set to be signed this summer, there has been talk that Arsene could cash-in on the French international.
However, Giroud has dismissed the reports and insists he’s happy at Arsenal, saying he wants to be here next season and is even open to signing a new contract.
“I have a contract until 2016 and I’m an Arsenal player. I want to be here next season, at least that’s my will.” he told the Mirror.
When asked if he would sign a new contract, Giroud added: “Why not?”
Giroud is certainly a player that divides opinion among fans. My personal feeling is he’s just not quite good enough to lead the line for Arsenal on a regular basis but we have to remember he’s been forced to play in practically every match throughout the season due to the lack of alternatives in the squad.
A fresh Giroud is a dangerous player and he’d be a useful weapon to have on the bench if we could sign a top class striker this summer. So although I wouldn’t be devastated if he was to leave this summer, I think he’s good enough to hang on to and will prove to be a useful squad player next season.
