RATINGS Arsenal’s 1-1 Bayern: Ox Superb But Criticism Of Ozil Harsh
We put in a brave performance but ultimately fell short as Bayern Munich progressed to the quarter finals of the Champions League 3-1 on aggregate after we played out a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night.
Here are my ratings:
Fabianski 7.5/10: Decent stop to deny Gotze at the end of the first half followed up by a superb save to deny Mandzukic midway through the second half. The Pole then finished off an impressive shift by saving a late penalty.
Sagna 7/10: Kept his compatriot Ribery relatively quite until one moment of poor defending allowed the winger to cross for their opener.
Mertesacker 8/10: The BFG was in excellent form back in his homeland. He made some crucial interceptions and was once again a calm head at the back.
Koscielny 7.5/10: Back from his injury and produced another great display. He made countless clearances and covered behind Per well.
Vermaelen 7/10: Played in his unfavoured left-back role but did very well. Obviously he doesn’t offer the attacking threat of Gibbs but he looked solid at the back.
Arteta 6/10: Poor shift from Arteta. He struggled against Thiago and Schweinsteiger in midfield and an early booking inhibited his ability to make tackles.
The Ox 8.5/10: Superb. The youngster once again stepped up to the plate in a big game. He was excellent in the first half and was always looking to run at the hosts. Faded slightly in the second period but overall a great nights work.
Cazorla 6.5/10: Didn’t track Schweinsteiger for the goal but you can’t really blame him, its not his natural job to track back. However, he didn’t offer much going forward either and he misplaced a few key passes.
Ozil 6/10: He’s been singled out once again by the media for some rough treatment, which is simply ridiculous. He started on the right side and yes he was quiet in first half, but so were most of our attacking players (with the exception of The Ox) as Bayern dominated possession. Plus, who knows when he started to feel his hamstring injury. The German is being used as a scapegoat once again.
Podolski 7/10: Was quiet in the opening 45 minutes but was far more involved after the break. Stunning finish for the goal to once again show why he’s easily the best finisher at the club.
Giroud 6/10: Offered little in attack. The ball wasn’t sticking when he received it and his link-up play was pretty poor. The closest he went to a goal was with a weak first half header.
Subs:
Rosicky 6.5/10: Saw more of the ball than Ozil and worked hard, but little end product.
Gnabry 6/10: Offered a little pace but not much else.
Flamini N/A: On too late.
So we’re dumped out of the Champions League at the last 16 stage once again. Thankfully, we’ve still got a glimmer of hope in the Premier League title race as well as a great chance to lift the FA Cup, so our season is still very much alive.
What were your thoughts on last nights game?
