Arsenal suffer huge Kai Havertz injury blow

Arsenal have suffered a huge blow as Kai Havertz is set to withdraw from the Germany national team due to an injury.

After struggling with fitness problems last term, the 27-year-old enjoyed a promising start this season, scoring three goals in seven appearances across all competitions.

However, he picked up an injury while on international duty with Germany in their Nations League clash against the Netherlands last night, forcing him to be substituted before half-time.

Jurgen Klopp’s side led the game for a long time, but the match ultimately finished 1-1 courtesy of Cody Gakpo’s late equaliser.

Now, on The Athletic, David Ornstein reports that Havertz is set to leave the Germany squad after sustaining a hamstring injury and will undergo a medical assessment at Arsenal to determine the severity of the issue.

There is optimism that Havertz’s injury isn’t anything serious and that he, valued at around £47m by Transfermarkt, will be able to return soon.

Despite selling Gabriel Jesus this summer, Arsenal didn’t sign a new striker. Meaning Mikel Arteta started the new season with Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres as the specialist striker options.

Arsenal suffer Havertz injury blow

The Swedish international was purchased from Sporting CP last summer to address the No.9 issues. But he has found it difficult to showcase his best in the Premier League, although he helped his side win the title last term.

So, Arteta used Havertz as the first-choice striker thus far this season. However, the Spanish boss might have to start Gyokeres regularly after the international break if Havertz remains sidelined for an extended period.

Mikel Merino can provide cover in the CF position if needed, although he is a midfielder by trait. The former Real Sociedad star has showcased his tendency to chip in with some important goals for club and country in recent times.

Meanwhile, after starting the season with seven consecutive victories across all competitions, Arsenal endured their first defeat of this season against Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League just before the international break.

The North London club are set to return to action against Leeds United in the league next month before taking on LOSC Lille in the Champions League.
