Arsenal told Isak would’ve been better than Gyokeres

Former striker turned pundit Jay Bothroyd has said that Alexander Isak would have been a better option for Arsenal than Viktor Gyokeres.

After finishing second in three consecutive Premier League campaigns, the Gunners prioritised purchasing a new striker last year to become English champions finally.

Following the Swedish international’s impressive performances for Sporting CP, Arsenal decided to sign him. Although he displayed inconsistent performances last term, Mikel Arteta’s side won the league title.

However, Arteta has used Kai Havertz as the first-choice striker thus far this season, while Gyokeres has played as the backup option. Gabriel Jesus joined Barcelona permanently this summer.

Now, on Football Uncensored, Bothroyd states (via Metro) that although Gyokeres displayed impressive performances in the Primeira Liga, he has been found out by the Premier League’s elite defenders.

So, Arsenal should’ve bought other names like Isak, who joined Liverpool from Newcastle, and he would have been a perfect acquisition. Hugo Ekitike, who also joined Liverpool last year, would have even been an excellent option.

However, the former striker says that Arsenal could now look to sign Julian Alvarez as he would be a perfect acquisition.

Bothroyd said:

“I wanted to get Alexander Isak from Newcastle, I think that was the perfect signing. Then Hugo Ekitike, that was a perfect signing. But I think Alvarez fits exactly what Arsenal need which is a player who can come in between the lines, he can get turned, he can manufacture his own goals, he can play out in wide areas and obviously he can play on the shoulder.”

Alvarez’s future was a subject of speculation this summer and Arsenal were said to be interested in signing him, but Atletico Madrid eventually managed to keep hold of him.

After moving to Anfield, Isak endured a dire debut campaign last term, with fitness problems being one of the key reasons. However, he has started the new season promisingly, scoring four goals and registering a solitary assist in seven appearances across all competitions.

Meaning he has already matched last season’s tally. Isak is a striker by trait but can provide cover on the flanks if needed. He is even at the prime stage of his career.

On the other hand, Ekitike showed glimpses of his qualities in the Premier League last term but is set to remain sidelined for an extended period due to a serious Achilles injury.
