Arsenal continuing negotiations to sign Bruno Guimaraes

Arsenal have reportedly continued negotiations over a deal to sign Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes, according to TEAMtalk.

Since moving to St James’ Park from Olympique Lyonnais, the 28-year-old has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. He guided the Magpies to Carabao Cup glory last year, ending the club’s seven-decade trophy drought.

The Brazilian struggled with fitness problems last year; still, he displayed his productivity, scoring nine goals and registering seven assists across all competitions.

Having been impressed by his recent impact for Newcastle, Arsenal have identified him as the primary target to reinforce the midfield department following Christian Norgaard’s struggles to break into Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up last term.

Now, TEAMtalk claim that Arsenal are continuing negotiations with the Magpies to sign the South American, and the Gunners believe they are close to finalising the operation for a fee worth more than £80m.

Newcastle are heading to Spain for a pre-season tour on Sunday, and Guimaraes doesn’t want to be part of that. There is a realistic chance that Arsenal and Newcastle could reach an agreement before then.

However, the report state that Newcastle want Guimaraes to report back for pre-season if an agreement can’t be reached before Sunday.

Guimaraes to Arsenal

Guimaraes has displayed his best as a box-to-box midfielder at Newcastle. However, he is comfortable in the defensive midfield position and CAM role.

He is quick, technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, has the ability to take set-pieces, can chip in with some important goals, and is efficient in defensive contributions.

Having proven his worth in club football, the midfielder has secured his place in the Brazilian national team’s starting line-up.

Guimaraes is a Premier League-proven player and is currently at the prime stage of his career. Therefore, he would be a great coup for Arsenal should they purchase him.

Arsenal currently have Declan Rice, Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi alongside Norgaard as midfield options. Moreover, Myles Lewis-Skelly can provide cover in this area if needed.

It is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to lure Guimaraes to the Emirates Stadium over the coming days.
