Arsenal plot swoop to sign Sporting’s Ivan Fresneda
Arsenal are reportedly planning to make a move to sign Sporting CP defender Ivan Fresneda, as per a recent report.
After moving to Jose Alvalade Stadium from Spanish side Real Valladolid in 2023, the 21-year-old initially took time to settle into his new surroundings before showcasing glimpses of his qualities last term.
In 39 appearances across all competitions, the youngster made four goal contributions and kept seven clean sheets. Moreover, he helped his side finish second in the Primeira Liga.
Now, as per a recent report (via Sport Witness), Arsenal kept a close eye on Fresneda’s development last term and, after being impressed by his performances, they have now identified him as a serious option to strengthen the right-back position.
Fresneda’s existing deal is set to run until 2028, and he has a £69m release clause in his contract. Sporting were previously open to cashing-in on him for a fee of more than £26m.
However, following his recent resurgence, the Lions consider Fresneda as ‘untouchable’ and see him as a future captain. So, Arsenal will have to launch a lucrative proposal to persuade the Portuguese giants to let him leave if they make a formal approach.
The report state that Sporting’s firm stance won’t be the only obstacle for Arsenal to finalise the operation as Newcastle United and Manchester City are also in this race.
Fresneda to Arsenal
Real Madrid have also kept a close eye on his situation, but having already purchased Denzel Dumfries, it is unlikely that they will make a move for Fresneda, as they also have Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Fresneda is a 6-foot-tall right-footed defensive-minded right-back. He is quick, strong, good in the air, comfortable playing out from the back, and is efficient in defensive contributions.
The youngster won 73% aerial duels in the Portuguese top-flight last term. So, he possesses the necessary physical attributes to flourish in the Premier League.
With Ben White struggling with fitness problems in recent years, Arsenal could do with signing a new right-back, and Fresneda might be a shrewd acquisition should they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services.
