Arsenal plot swoop to sign West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes
Arsenal are reportedly planning to make a move to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, as per The Standard.
Although the 21-year-old endured relegation with Southampton last term, the Hammers decided to secure his service ahead of this campaign, having been impressed by his performances.
Like last season, Fernandes experienced the disappointment of relegation once again. However, he showcased his qualities for West Ham this term, scoring five goals and registering as many assists in 42 appearances across all competitions.
Now, The Standard state that after failing to secure their top-flight status, West Ham need to raise more than £100m through player sales to balance the books.
So, they are prepared to cash-in on Fernandes, but with his existing deal set to run until 2030, they don’t want to sanction a cut-price deal and have slapped a whopping £80m price tag on his head.
With Manchester United prioritising revamping the midfield department following Casemiro’s departure, they are showing a concrete interest in signing the Portuguese.
However, Arsenal are also interested in the youngster, having been impressed by his performances. Moreover, Paris Saint-Germain are in this race as well.
Fernandes to Arsenal
Fernandes is a box-to-box midfielder by trait but is also comfortable in the deep-lying playmaker position. Furthermore, he can provide cover in the creative midfield position if needed.
He is quick, strong, technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, and has an eye for long-range passing. Moreover, he is efficient in taking set-pieces, can deliver excellent crosses from the wide areas, has an eye for scoring goals from distance, and is also efficient in defensive contributions.
Fernandes is a highly talented player and possesses the necessary attributes to flourish at the highest level. So, he would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to secure his service by defeating other clubs in this race.
Meanwhile, apart from the Portuguese, Arsenal are reportedly also interested in Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali to strengthen the engine room.
On the other hand, Mikel Arteta is said to be keen on upgrading the left flank, and Arsenal have been linked with a host of names in recent weeks.
