Hincapie bids farewell as Arsenal move edges closer
Arsenal’s incoming new signing Piero Hincapie has said his goodbyes to Bayer Leverkusen teammates, according to reports from Fabrizio Romano.
The Ecuador international was included in Leverkusen’s matchday squad against Werder Bremen but did not feature, remaining an unused substitute in Erik ten Hag’s side.
Arsenal and Leverkusen have reached an agreement for a season-long loan which carries an option to buy, as per Romano.
The full package is worth £45 million, with an added ten per cent sell-on clause. Arsenal wanted a loan with option to buy clause so they could put the deal in next years accounts.
Personal terms have already been settled, leaving only the final details before the 23-year-old completes his switch to North London.
Hincapie is set to travel to London to undergo his medical before signing a five-year contract with the London giants.
Arsenal’s busy summer continues
Should the transfer go through, as expected, Hincapie will become Arsenal’s eighth signing of a very active transfer window.
Sporting Director Andrea Berta and manager Mikel Arteta have worked together to strengthen almost every area of the squad.
The Gunners have already secured the services of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, defender Cristhian Mosquera, midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Nørgaard, as well as attacking options Viktor Gyökeres, Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze.
Hincapie’s impending arrival will further strengthen Mikel Arteta’s defensive options should the deal go through before Monday’s deadline.
Hincapie’s profile and experience
The Ecuadorian mainly operates as a left-sided central defender but is also comfortable at left-back.
His versatility has made him a long-term target on Arsenal’s recruitment list.
He joined Leverkusen from Argentinian club CA Talleres in 2021 and quickly developed into one of Europe’s most promising defenders.
Over four seasons in Germany, he has made 166 appearances for the club.
On the international stage, Hincapie has represented Ecuador 46 times, becoming an important figure for his national team.
Arsenal will be counting on Hincapie to strengthen their backline and play a key role in their push for major trophies
The 23-year-old has already featured in Leverkusen’s opening two matches of the 2025/26 campaign, but his focus now appears to be shifting towards a new chapter in North London.
