Arsenal have started direct negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen to secure a deal for defender Piero Hincapie, according to reports from Fabrizio Romano.

The Gunners are keen to add another defender to their ranks before Monday’s transfer deadline.

Hincapie has been identified as the prime target, and his versatility makes him an attractive option for Mikel Arteta.

The Ecuadorian international is capable of operating at left-back or in central defence, giving Arteta greater flexibility in his backline.

Romano says Arsenal are now in ‘direct talks’ to get a deal agreed with Leverkusen. This comes after agreeing personal terms with the 23-year-old.

Arsenal want to avoid last season’s struggles

Last season, Arsenal’s defensive depth was tested at crucial moments. Injuries to key players disrupted the team’s rhythm and forced Arteta to shuffle his options.

The lack of cover was one of the reasons their momentum slowed towards the end of the campaign.

This summer, the club have already secured the signing of Cristhian Mosquera, but they are not finished.

The possibility of Jakub Kiwior leaving for FC Porto has only added urgency to their search for another defender.

Arteta is determined to ensure his side have enough options to compete across all competitions. Therefore, he will only green light Kiwior’s move to Porto if Arsenal can get a deal done for Hincapie.

Leverkusen’s stance and player’s approval

Bayer Leverkusen want the full value of Hincapie’s £52 million release clause to be paid.

The German side regard him as one of their most reliable defenders and an important part of their set-up. For that reason, they will only consider a deal if the structure suits their demands.

However, Arsenal are hoping to agree a reduced fee and are working on a loan proposal with an obligation to buy next summer.

This type of arrangement would allow them to manage finances while still securing the player’s services long term.

The decision now rests with Leverkusen, who will assess if the offer meets their expectations.

On the player’s side, Hincapie is keen to move to Arsenal and has already agreed personal terms ahead of the proposed transfer.

Arsenal now want to accelerate talks in order to finalise the deal before the transfer window closes.

With the deadline approaching, the coming days will be crucial in determining if Hincapie becomes Arsenal’s latest signing.
