Arsenal in talks to sign Piero Hincapié from Bayer Leverkusen

Arsenal are in talks over a move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapié, who wants to leave the German champions, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic.

The Gunners remain focused on building a squad capable of winning major trophies after three consecutive seasons finishing as Premier League runners-up.

Their last silverware came five years ago – the FA Cup – and the pressure to deliver success is growing.

Mikel Arteta has already brought in Cristhian Mosquera to strengthen the backline.

However, Ornstein reports that Jakub Kiwior and Oleksandr Zinchenko could leave before the window closes.

If those exits happen, Arsenal will need another versatile defender to maintain depth and balance.

Hincapié, aged 23, fits that profile perfectly and the report claims that Arsenal are now in talks over a deal to sign the versatile defender.

He is comfortable as a central defender and can also operate at left-back, making him an attractive option for Arteta’s tactical plans.

Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg reports that Leverkusen value the Ecuadorian has a release clause worth £52 million and are determined to hold out for that figure.

The Bundesliga side regard Hincapié as an important part of their squad, despite his desire to seek a new challenge.

Tottenham Hotspur are another club exploring the possibility of signing him. Reports from Fabrizio Romano reveals that Spurs have even proposed a loan move with an obligation to buy, showing the level of competition Arsenal could face.

However, Ornstein claims that Hincapié has made it clear his preference is to join Arsenal over Spurs. So it looks like the Gunners could snatch another player from their fierce rivals after beating them to Eberechi Eze last week.

Hincapié’s style of play has made him one of Europe’s most promising defenders. He combines speed, physicality, and aggression with strong technical ability.

His composure on the ball allows him to make progressive passes and even drive forward when needed.

While his aggression can occasionally lead to lapses in concentration, his overall quality and versatility make him a valuable asset.
