Arsenal plotting swoop to sign long-term target Douglas Luiz
Arsenal are reportedly considering making a move to sign Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.
The Gunners hold a long-term interest in the Brazilian as they attempted to purchase him from Aston Villa after being impressed by his displays a few years ago.
However, the West Midlands club eventually managed to keep hold of him by tying him down to a new contract. So, when he was leaving the club last summer, it was thought that Mikel Arteta’s side may revive their interest in him to finally secure his service.
However, they didn’t make a move for him and eventually decided to sign Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad to strengthen the midfield department. In the end, Luiz joined Juventus.
However, he has had a disappointing first half of this season in Serie A so speculation surrounding his future has started to emerge in this winter window.
Luiz to Arsenal
Fichajes state that Arsenal are still interested in the South American and have been keeping a close eye on his situation before making a potential swoop.
The former Aston Villa man is willing to return to the Premier League to play regularly and Juventus are prepared to cash-in on him. So, Arsenal could be able to secure his service should they formalise their interest.
However, purchasing him won’t be straightforward as Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham are also considering signing him.
The Brazilian is valued at around £38m by Transfermarkt and still has a contract until 2029 with Juventus. So, they are in a strong position to demand a big fee to let him leave.
Thomas Partey and Jorginho have entered the final few months of their respective contracts. So, should they eventually leave, signing new faces to replace them will become a necessity.
Luiz is a talented player and has already proven his worth in the Premier League so he would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal if they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to hire him in January or at the end of this season.
