Arsenal eye surprise late swoop to sign Calvert-Lewin
Arsenal are reportedly planning to make a surprise swoop to sign Everton star Dominic Calvert-Lewin before the end of this transfer window, as per Caught Offside.
It has been widely reported that the Gunners are keen on signing a new striker this summer. A plethora of names have emerged as potential targets over the last few weeks with Ivan Toney, Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres being among them.
However, they haven’t made a concrete approach to sign anyone yet, but with Eddie Nketiah on the verge of leaving the club, Arsenal could finally make an attempt to sign a new striker late in this window.
Caught Offside states that Osimhen is an option for Arsenal but he is too expensive, so they have decided to explore alternative options and have registered their interest in signing Calvert-Lewin.
The report says that with the striker entering the final year of his current contract, he is keen on leaving Goodison Park and Everton could also be forced to cash-in on him to avoid losing him for free next year.
Calvert-Lewin to Arsenal
However, CO states that purchasing Calvert-Lewin won’t be straightforward for the North London club as Chelsea and Newcastle United are also plotting a swoop for him.
It has previously been reported that Everton want a fee of around £40m to sell their star man so the striker won’t be a cheap option for Arsenal.
Calvert-Lewin previously showcased his qualities in the Premier League but he has been struggling in recent years and injury problems are one of the reasons behind his recent downfall.
So, it has come as a bit of a surprise that Arsenal are considering signing him when a more proven option like Ivan Toney is still available.
Nevertheless, it looks like Arteta is planning to keep faith in Kai Havertz to score goals and help the club finally win the Premier League title so the Spanish boss is considering signing a backup striker to support the German.
Although Gabriel Jesus is still at the club, he has struggled with injury problems in recent years and has looked more comfortable playing out wide than through the middle.
It is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to make a concrete approach to sign Calvert-Lewin before the end of this window.
