Arsenal are reportedly prioritising signing Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams this summer, as per The Athletic.
The Spaniard has been attracting the attention of several big clubs around Europe after showcasing his qualities for club and country in recent times.
Having helped his club qualify for the Europa League and win the Copa del Rey last term, the 22-year-old played a key role for Spain in the European Championship triumph, beating Germany, Italy, France and England in the process.
Now, according to the report by The Athletic, Arsenal have identified Williams as the primary target if they opt to reinforce their wide areas this summer.
However, the report says purchasing the forward won’t be straightforward for the Gunners as he has a £49m release clause in his current deal and Athletic Bilbao will only allow their star man to leave if the money is paid in full.
Williams to Arsenal
However, Mikel Arteta’s side don’t have that much money at the moment and will have to raise funds by selling some stars to make this deal happen.
Moreover, it has been reported that Barcelona are also interested in signing him and additionally, Chelsea are plotting a swoop for him as well. Therefore, Arsenal will have to overcome stiff competition from their rivals in getting any potential deal done for him.
Williams is a versatile forward as he is comfortable playing on either flank. So, he would be able to provide cover for Bukayo Saka when needed should he join the club.
He is quick, can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas, has the efficiency of finishing off his chances, can create chances for fellow attackers and also works hard without possession.
It remains to be seen whether the North London club eventually manage to secure his signature in this transfer window to reinforce their attacking department.
Arsenal haven’t made any signings yet but they have reportedly been working on a deal to purchase Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna to strengthen the backline.
Additionally, it has been reported that Arteta wants a new striker and midfielder before the end of this window. Therefore, it remains to be seen how much money the Emirates club eventually spend this summer.
